Happy Birthday to the Hungry Caterpillar!
Today we celebrate the 45th anniversary of Eric Carle’s iconic children’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
More than 37 million copies have been sold since it was published in 1969 and it is now described by many as a reading rite of passage with children all over the world continuing to love the colourful artwork and interactive format.
The books varying page sizes and pierced pieces of vibrant fruit are perfect for little fingers to wiggle through, creating a fun reading experience and subtly teaching its young reader about colours, counting and the days of the week.
Carle’s inspiration sprang from his love of nature and the books he read as a child after he moved from New York to Germany as a young boy.
Here are a few fun facts...
The Caterpillar eats 26 different foods in the book
It has been translated into more than 55 languages
Eric Carle has written and illustrated more than 70 books
The original title was A Week with Willi Worm
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day is celebrated on March 20 every year marking the onset of spring but it was actually first published on 3 June in 1969
